Research Manitoba offers a range of funding programs that support: trainees, experienced investigators, major research infrastructure, industry research, and industry development.
Many of Manitoba researchers get their start in research through one of our funding programs.
Research Manitoba Trainee Awards
Master’s Studentship Award
Our Master’s Studentship Awards support highly qualified Master’s trainees in health, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities, to prepare for careers as independent researchers in industry or within Manitoba’s research enterprise.

Studentships support highly qualified PhD trainees in health, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities, to prepare for careers as independent researchers in industry or within Manitoba’s research enterprise.

Research Postdoctoral Fellowships
Research Postdoctoral Fellowships support highly qualified postdoctoral trainees to prepare for careers as independent researchers. These exceptional trainees significantly increase the productivity of the research programs with which they are affiliated.

Dr. Dick Smith HIV/AIDS Epidemiology Fellowship
This fellowship honours the legacy of Dr. Dick Smith, a visionary pioneer in HIV/AIDS patient treatment and education in Manitoba.
This fellowship will support a postdoctoral researcher in advancing HIV research.

Matching Funds Awards
Canada Foundation for Innovation
Research Manitoba’s CFI Matching Fund program provides matching funds (20-40% of project total) for proposals that have been awarded grants through one of CFI’s competitions.
Mitacs
Through Research Manitoba’s formal partnership with the Mitacs program, Manitoba trainees at all levels can continue their academic training while also working with local companies on industry research and development.

New Investigator Operating Grant
The New Investigator Operating Grant program is a peer-reviewed competition designed to help launch the careers of outstanding researchers entering their first academic appointment phase. These grants support Manitoba’s early-career researchers (ECRs) to achieve the research productivity and track record necessary for obtaining longer-term, more sustainable funding.

The Innovation Proof-of-Concept Grant strengthens Manitoba-based research and innovation by filling a funding gap in the Manitoba innovation ecosystem, to test innovative products that have the potential to push an industry or market forward.

Research Connections
The Research Connections grant provides funding for creating Manitoba research-related events.
These events may create skill development opportunities relevant to the research community, connect researchers across disciplines, promote research findings to the public, or connect researchers with potential industry partners.
