Today, Research Manitoba announces the allocation of $1.31 million in funding for 54 Trainee Awards. These awards will benefit Master’s students, PhD students, and Postdoctoral Fellows, supporting the next generation of researchers in Manitoba.

Research Manitoba is proud to partner with the following organizations on this year’s awards:
- CancerCare Manitoba
- Centre for Healthcare Innovation
- Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba
- Health Sciences Centre Foundation
- Manitoba Lung Association
Collectively, these partners contributed $340,000 towards this year’s Trainee Awards.
The funded research projects encompass a diverse range of fields such as neuroscience, healthcare, environmental science, and social studies. Specific topics include MRI technology, language proficiency, healthcare experiences, protein roles in diseases, medication impacts during pregnancy, environmental influences, natural resource management, cognitive therapy, disease mechanisms, mental health, and public art.
This investment in early-stage researchers represents our commitment to advancing research and innovation in Manitoba. By supporting these individuals, we are supporting the creation of new research programs ensuring that Manitoba remains at the forefront of scientific and technological progress. We are excited to see the impact these projects will have on our community and beyond.
The Trainee Awards support highly qualified Master’s students, PhD Trainees and Postdoctoral Fellows, preparing them for careers as independent researchers across various sectors including industry and the healthcare system, among others.
This initiative not only attracts and retains top-tier students within Manitoba but also increases the number of studentships awarded annually through partnerships with local organizations. Applicants are considered under Health, Natural Sciences & Engineering, and Social Sciences & Humanities categories. Each award consists of an annual stipend for one year.
The Manitoba government is proud to support the next generation of researchers in Manitoba. This funding fosters innovation and discovery across a wide range of fields, and strengthens our province’s position as a leader in research and development.
