Championing Neurodiversity Through Research, Innovation, and Inclusion.

Autism Awareness Month is a time to amplify voices, challenge misconceptions, and ignite change. At Research Manitoba, we stand in solidarity with the autism community, supporting the research that unlocks potential, fosters inclusion, and paves the way for a more understanding world. Autism is not a limitation—it is a spectrum of strengths. Through science, education, and advocacy, we are working to ensure that individuals with autism receive the support they need to thrive.

Pioneering Research, Transforming Lives.

Groundbreaking research is happening right here in Manitoba, reshaping how we understand and support individuals with autism. Research Manitoba is proud to fund and champion visionary projects that address key challenges in autism diagnosis, education, and care—projects that are not just advancing knowledge but actively changing lives.

One such groundbreaking project is led by Dr. Fuat Balci from the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Manitoba. His research, NeVRo: Combining calcium imaging, optogenetics, and virtual reality to investigate internal clock in autism, delves deep into the neural mechanisms of ASD. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, his work is unlocking insights that could revolutionize therapies and interventions, offering new hope for more precise and effective treatments.

Meanwhile, Dr. Florencia Ricci at the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba is leading a crucial investigation into the intersection of immigration and autism diagnoses. Her research has uncovered an over-representation of immigrant families among young children diagnosed with ASD, revealing the urgent need for culturally sensitive autism services and policies. By shining a light on these disparities, Dr. Ricci’s findings are driving advocacy efforts to ensure autism support systems are accessible and equitable for all communities.

Beyond Awareness: Action for a More Inclusive Future.

Autism Awareness Month is more than just recognizing the challenges—it’s about taking meaningful action toward a more inclusive future. We celebrate the relentless dedication of researchers, educators, healthcare professionals, and advocates who are making a difference every day.

This month, we encourage everyone to engage, learn, and support autism research and advocacy efforts. Together, we can create a society where understanding and inclusion are not just goals—but realities.

At Research Manitoba, we are committed to driving progress forward. By investing in knowledge, innovation, and inclusivity, we are building a Manitoba where every individual with  has the opportunities, resources, and respect they deserve. Through continued collaboration and research, we are shaping a future that empowers individuals with autism to reach their full potential
