Applications are now being accepted for the Manitoba Solutions Grant (MSG), a new funding program that will support up to $100,000 for research projects that work with community to address the province’s most pressing research needs. Funding through this first intake will focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies, in alignment with the Manitoba government’s current strategic priorities.
Manitobans expect research to deliver real results in their communities, workplaces, and health systems.
By investing in collaborative, made-in-Manitoba research, the Manitoba Solutions Grant will help turn ideas into practical tools, policies, and services that improve people’s lives, not just in Manitoba but with global impact.
The Manitoba Solutions Grant supports research that contributes to the responsible development of advanced technologies across Manitoba, across all sectors.
Over the past year, we’ve seen increasing proposals exploring how artificial intelligence can be applied to real-world challenges across Manitoba’s research landscape, from advancing healthcare decision-making and wastewater treatment to optimizing food production and developing cleaner energy solutions. We’ve also seen growing interest in examining the broader societal impacts of AI itself.
By focusing this intake of the Manitoba Solutions Grant on AI and emerging technologies, we can support more innovative projects that deepen our understanding of both the potential and the limits of this rapidly evolving field.
Administered by Research Manitoba, MSG supports research teams based at eligible Manitoba institutions and requires at least one knowledge user as a co-applicant. Knowledge users represent the community side of research, e.g. organizations or individuals who will directly apply the results, such as healthcare providers, industry partners, or non-profits.
For example, a university research team might collaborate with a local mental health organization to co-develop an artificial intelligence tool that identifies early indicators of depression in youth. This approach ensures that projects are co-designed with those who will ultimately use the outcomes, resulting in research that is both practical and beneficial to Manitobans.
Awards will provide up to $100,000 per year for a maximum of two years. This new program is part of a broader effort made possible by the Manitoba government’s 2025 investment, which increased Research Manitoba’s operating budget by $5 million to expand programming that strengthens innovation, talent development and economic growth.
“The Manitoba Solutions Grant brings researchers and knowledge users together from day one to co-design projects with tangible benefits.
This first intake on AI and emerging technologies will build capacity to apply advanced tools ethically and effectively.”
The application deadline for the first intake of Manitoba Solutions Grant is November 24, 2025.
